Engagement Photos in Japan: One Hour in Tokyo, or a Half Day in Kimono?

The short answer

Yes. In Japan, engagement photos are booked as a pre-wedding shoot.

Many couples from the US call it engagement photos. Couples from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan usually call the same thing a pre-wedding shoot. Both mean photographs of the two of you before the wedding.

For one relaxed hour in your own clothes, book a short session in Tokyo. For kimono, hair and make-up at a shrine or under cherry blossom, book a half day. Prices start at ¥80,000 and ¥260,000 (before tax).

Two ways to do engagement photos in Japan

The choice comes down to what you want to wear, and where you want to be.

PlanTimeWhat you wearWhereYou receiveBest for
One hour: Tokyo Mini, ¥80,000 (before tax)1 hourYour own outfitsTokyo30 retouched photos and a 30-second reelA relaxed hour, a honeymoon or a surprise proposal
Half day: Photo Collection, ¥260,000 (before tax)About 3 to 4 hoursKimono or a dress, with dressing, hair and make-upTokyo, Kyoto, the Mt. Fuji area or Okinawa, at the same price50 retouched photosKimono, shrines and cherry blossom
Half day with film: Signature, ¥380,000 (before tax)About 3 to 4 hoursKimono or a dress, with dressing, hair and make-upThe same four areas, at the same price50 retouched photos, a 90-second 4K film and a vertical reelCouples who want moving pictures too

Tokyo Mini was designed for anniversaries, proposals and honeymoons. Some couples also use it for relaxed engagement photos. It does not include kimono, hair or make-up.

Three questions to find your plan

  • Do you want to wear kimono, or a wedding dress? Choose a half day. Dressing, hair and make-up are in the price.
  • Do you want Mt. Fuji or Kyoto in the photographs? Choose a half day. The one-hour session is in Tokyo.
  • Is it one easy hour, or a surprise proposal? Choose the one-hour session, in your own clothes.

Engagement photos under cherry blossom

Cherry blossom is the season couples ask about most. The peak moves each year, so plan around a travel window rather than one fixed date.

  • Tokyo: full bloom fell between 22 March and 4 April in each of the last eleven years.
  • Kyoto: usually a few days after Tokyo.
  • Lake Kawaguchi, by Mt. Fuji: roughly seven to ten days after Tokyo.
  • Forecasts: Japan’s forecasters publish the first forecasts for the coming spring each January. Our guide below is updated every month.

For these weeks, we suggest booking four to six months ahead. Dates, Mt. Fuji timing and backup planning are in our cherry blossom 2027 guide.

Kimono for your engagement photos

Kimono is the clearest way to make the photographs look like Japan. Three outfits come up most often.

  • Shiromuku: the formal all-white bridal kimono.
  • Iro-uchikake: a coloured, embroidered outer robe, most often red.
  • Montsuki haori hakama: the groom’s black crested kimono, which suits either bridal outfit.

Kimono, dressing, hair and make-up are included in the half-day price. To add a dress as well, a second outfit is ¥60,000. How to choose is in our wedding kimono guide.

Getting engaged in Japan first?

Some couples propose in Japan, then photograph the moment. For a surprise proposal, we scout the spot and hide the photographer. After the question, it becomes a celebration shoot.

This runs on the one-hour Tokyo session. Details are on our anniversary and proposal page.

If you only want an hour of casual photos, a freelance photographer from a travel marketplace usually costs less. Many one-hour listings we checked in October 2026 were priced under ¥40,000.

Every package and add-on is on our pricing page. How to compare totals fairly is in our cost guide.

Worth knowing before you choose

  • The one-hour session is in Tokyo, in your own clothes. Kimono and Mt. Fuji need a half day.
  • Some of Japan’s most famous sites do not accept shoots, including Kiyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari. See our Kyoto locations guide.
  • Cherry blossom can move by about two weeks from year to year. Nobody can promise full bloom on a date booked months ahead.
  • For a quick, casual hour, a marketplace photographer is usually cheaper than we are.

Questions about engagement photos in Japan

Is an engagement shoot the same as a pre-wedding shoot?
Yes. Both mean photographs of the two of you before the wedding. Many couples from the US say engagement shoot; couples from Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan usually say pre-wedding shoot.
Can we wear kimono for our engagement photos?
Yes, on a half-day package. Kimono, dressing, hair and make-up are included in the price. The one-hour Tokyo session is in your own outfits.
When can we have cherry blossom in our engagement photos?
In Tokyo, full bloom fell between 22 March and 4 April in each of the last eleven years. Lake Kawaguchi, by Mt. Fuji, is roughly seven to ten days later. We plan from your travel window, with a backup date.
What if it rains during cherry blossom season?
We do not cancel for rain. We move to covered approaches, shrine halls and paper umbrellas. We only reschedule when a weather warning is issued or transport stops, and we confirm with you by 18:00 the day before. For the one-hour session, we agree a rain plan with you in advance.
Can you help with a surprise proposal?
Yes, with the one-hour Tokyo session. We scout the spot, hide the photographer and capture the moment. Then it becomes a celebration shoot.
How do we pay, and what if we cancel?
By card, in Japanese yen; full payment confirms your booking, and you see the terms in writing first. If you cancel, we refund 90% of what you paid, or hold 100% as a credit for a shoot up to the same season next year.
How far ahead should we book?
For cherry blossom and autumn leaves, four to six months ahead. For other seasons, send your dates and we will check.
