Tokyo Pre-Wedding Photo Locations: 8 Settings We Love
Tokyo is not one backdrop — it is a hundred. The hard part of planning a pre-wedding shoot here is not finding a beautiful place; it is choosing between them. These are the eight kinds of settings we return to again and again, and how to think about which belong in your shoot.
1. Shrine gardens
Vermilion gates, stone lanterns, raked gravel and four centuries of calm. In kimono, this is the definitive Tokyo portrait. Most shrines require an official photography permit — we arrange and pay for these as part of every package, which also means we shoot at hours when the grounds are quiet.
2. The neon canyons
Shibuya and Shinjuku after dark are the counter-image: wet asphalt, lantern alleys, a thousand signs reflected in shop windows. A dress look here contrasts beautifully with a morning in kimono — two Japans in one day.
3. Traditional shopping streets
Old Tokyo survives in its shotengai — retro arcades and temple-town lanes where the signage hasn't changed in fifty years. Wonderful for relaxed, walking-and-laughing frames between the formal setups.
4. Riversides and bridges
The Sumida river gives you open sky, water light and the skyline in one frame — breathing room that dense city streets can't offer. Early morning is gold here: soft light and almost no crowds.
5. Gardens in season
Tokyo's landscape gardens track the calendar: plum in February, cherry blossom in late March, iris in June, maple fire in late November. If your travel dates land on a season, we will build the shoot around it.
6. Skyline observation points
For couples who love the scale of the city, a high viewpoint at dusk — the city turning from grey to gold to electric — is a closing scene worth planning for.
7. Quiet residential lanes
Some of our favourite frames happen in ordinary places: a hill street in the evening, bicycles, power lines, vending-machine glow. These are the images that feel most like Japan as you lived it.
8. The unplanned in-betweens
Taxis, station platforms, crossing signals. We keep cameras up between locations — the walking shots are often the ones couples print largest.
