Autumn Leaves Pre-Wedding in Japan: November's Quiet Magic
Everyone knows about sakura. Fewer overseas couples discover Japan's other great season — and those who do often say it photographed even better. Autumn foliage (koyo) turns the country crimson and gold for most of November, with steadier weather and a longer window than spring's two-week bloom.
When do the leaves turn?
In Tokyo and Kyoto, colours build through mid-November and peak from late November into early December. Ginkgo avenues turn first — pure yellow tunnels — followed by the maples' red. Around Mt. Fuji, higher altitude brings the peak several weeks earlier, from late October.
Why autumn is the planner's season
- A longer window. Three to four usable weeks, against sakura's two.
- Kinder weather. November is one of Japan's driest, clearest months — which also makes it prime Mt. Fuji visibility season.
- The kimono argument. Deep reds and golds flatter traditional dress like no other backdrop; a white dress against a wall of red maple is just as striking.

Shrine gardens and temple grounds in Tokyo; Kyoto's temple gardens at the most celebrated moment of their year; and the Fuji lakes, where autumn grass, red maple and the snow-capped summit stack into one frame.
When to book
Autumn is Japan's second-busiest shoot season, and late-November weekends go first. Reserving by late summer keeps the full choice of dates; September still finds good weekdays. Tell us your dates and we will map the colour forecast against them.
