Tokyo and Mt. Fuji on One Pre-Wedding Trip: One Day or Two?

The short answer

Yes, on one day — if Tokyo comes after dark.

Photograph the Mt. Fuji area by daylight, travel back in the afternoon, and photograph Tokyo once night falls. That is the order that works for a single day.

If you want daylight in both places, plan two days. The road between Tokyo and the Fuji Five Lakes is prone to traffic, so the transfer time is hard to predict.

Three ways to plan Tokyo and Mt. Fuji

The real choice is whether you want Tokyo by day or Tokyo at night.

PlanTimeTokyo looks likePackageBest for

Three questions to find your plan

  • Do you want Tokyo at night, and Mt. Fuji too? One day works: Fuji by day, Tokyo after dark.
  • Do you want Tokyo’s streets by day as well? Asakusa and Tokyo Tower are photographed early or in daylight. Plan two days.
  • Do you have only one day for photographs, or want an easy pace? Choose one place, and enjoy the other as sightseeing.

The one-day order: Fuji by day, Tokyo by night

Mt. Fuji needs daylight to show its outline. So on a one-day plan, Fuji comes first and Tokyo second.

  • Morning: your first look around Mt. Fuji. Staying at Lake Kawaguchi the night before means no early start from Tokyo.
  • After midday: finish at Fuji and travel to Tokyo. The express coach from Shinjuku to Lake Kawaguchi takes about 1 hour 45 minutes; traffic makes it longer.
  • After sunset: your second look at night, at Tokyo Station, Marunouchi or Shinjuku.

This is an example of the order. The actual times follow the season’s sunset and the traffic on the day.

By day: a shrine near Mt. Fuji.

After dark: Tokyo Station.

Why not Tokyo in the morning and Fuji in the afternoon? With daylight needed in both places, the transfer eats into the shooting time. One traffic jam, and the second location can run past sunset. For Tokyo’s night locations and their rules, see our Tokyo locations guide.

When the sun sets in Tokyo

A one-day plan is built around Tokyo’s sunset. In winter it is dark early; in June, sunset is about two and a half hours later.

Two days: daylight in both

Give Tokyo and Mt. Fuji a half day each. Put the travel between the two days, and it never takes shooting time.

  • Put Fuji first. If cloud hides the mountain, the later days of your trip can serve as the backup date.
  • On the Fuji day, stay at Lake Kawaguchi the night before, so you can start at dawn. The lake is about two hours from Tokyo.
  • On the Tokyo day, Asakusa’s old streets and Kaminarimon gate are best early in the morning; Tokyo Tower works from daytime to dusk.

If Mt. Fuji hides

You only know on the morning whether the mountain will show. Prepare for it either way.

  • The odds: Fuji City’s twenty-nine-year record shows the mountain visible on 84% of December mornings and 23% of July’s.
  • A backup date: we agree a backup date within your trip when you book. If the mountain is completely covered, we move to that date at no extra charge.
  • Without the mountain: shrines and forests around Mt. Fuji make a complete set on their own.

What it costs

Both places on one day is the full-day package. For two days, we quote the total in writing before you pay, based on what you shoot each day.

PlanPackageWhat is included
Both places on one dayPremium Full Day ¥550,000 (before tax)Full day, two locations, two outfits and looks, 75 retouched photographs, a three-minute film
Two daysQuoted in writing before you payBased on what you shoot each day

+ 10% Japanese consumption taxTax-inclusive totals:Photo ¥286,000Full day ¥605,000

  • Is there a separate location fee at Mt. Fuji? Most location permits and their fees are included in the package. If a location needs a fee you would pay yourselves, we tell you in writing before you book.
  • Kimono, dressing, hair and make-up are included in the package price.

Every package is on our pricing page. How to compare totals fairly is in our cost guide.

Worth knowing before you choose

  • Both places on one day means a long day of shooting and travel. It is tiring.
  • On a one-day plan, Tokyo is night only. Daylight scenes such as Asakusa need another day.
  • Traffic can lengthen the transfer. Keep the rest of that day loose.
  • Two days means one more day in Japan.

Questions about Tokyo and Mt. Fuji

Can we shoot Tokyo in the morning and Mt. Fuji in the afternoon?
With daylight needed in both places, the transfer eats into the shooting time, and one traffic jam can push the second location past sunset. For daylight in both, we recommend two days.
Is there a separate location fee for Mt. Fuji?
Most location permits and their fees are included in the package. If a location needs a fee you would pay yourselves, we tell you in writing before you book.
Where do we shoot Tokyo at night?
Tokyo Station and Marunouchi suit weekday evenings into the night. Shinjuku’s neon streets come alive after dark. Each location’s rules are in our Tokyo locations guide.
What if Mt. Fuji is hidden by cloud on the day?
We agree a backup date within your trip when you book. If the mountain is completely covered, we move to that date at no extra charge.
Can one outfit be kimono and the other a wedding dress?
Yes. The full-day package includes two outfits and two looks. For example, shiromuku by day at Mt. Fuji, and a wedding dress at night in Tokyo.
Where should we stay?
Lake Kawaguchi, the night before the Fuji shoot. Over chat, we also recommend hotels and restaurants by area and by the food you love, at no charge.

Beyond the shoot

Planning the rest of your Tokyo and Fuji trip?
